Tasting Notes: Plumcot, Rose Buttercream, Cherry Blossom

Description:  This coffee comes from Gaia Estate in the Karatu district of the Arusha region in Tanzania. The farm is located on ridges along the edge of the Ngorongoro caldera, a giant 2,000 foot deep and 10+ mile wide crater formed by a collapsed ancient volcano. The farm has been in the Vohora family for over 50 years and is currently run by Neel and Kavita Vohora. Despite being an older farm, they continue to innovate and experiment with new varieties and processes.

This coffee tastes like a Gesha but the profile has been shifted by the process. There is a 4 day held-in-cherry fermentation that emphasizes the rose and dark stone fruit notes, similar to held-in-cherry Colombian coffee like some pink bourbons. The Tanzania Terroir adds subtle spice notes in the background that add to the uniqueness of this Gesha.

Impressions: In the aroma there is pink peppercorn followed by dark sweet stone fruit like plumcot, and cherry. Underneath the fruit and spice, there is a creamy, sweet, and floral character reminiscent of rose buttercream. Finally, the aroma finishes with a cherry blossom-like florality and marzipan sweetness. The palate emphasizes the stone fruit and sweetness while bringing in some subtle spice notes like coriander seed and green cardamom before finishing with creamy florals.
