Tasting Notes: Goldenberry, Douglas Fir Tip, Dried Rose

Description: This is another great coffee from Juan Peña, who produces some of our favorite coffee in Ecuador. Juan Peña owns the farm, La Papaya, but also manages and produces for several other farms using trees from the same genetic pool while replicating the growing, harvesting, and processing methods across farms.

To contrast our last coffee from him, the Sidra from Yacuri, this time we have a Typica Mejorado from Yunguilla. Yacuri is said to have more of a sweet spice and nutty character while Yunguilla is said to have higher florality and more citrus notes in comparison. We do find some of these traits in either coffee with the previous Sidra having some confectionary honey and marzipan notes and this Typica Mejorado having more brightness.

Impressions: In the aroma we are first reminded of goldenberry (also known as peruvian groundcherry or cape gooseberry) as well as redcurrant and raspberry. Beyond that we notice a bright and fresh green/herbal character that reminds us of douglas fir tips with their mint, pine, bubblegum, and citrus notes. Beyond the fruit and herbal character we finally arrive at a floral and tea-like backdrop of chamomile, dried rose petals, and peony. The taste follows a similar journey as the aroma but with less of the green notes and more focus on the floral and tea-like character in the mid palate and finish.
